American Family Insurance – 10th Largest Auto Insurance Company
Although American Family Insurance Group ranks 10th among the top 25 largest automobile insurance providers in the U.S., capturing a relatively small 1.83% of the industry’s market share, it ranks a very respectable third in customer satisfaction ratings as researched by J. D. Power & Associates, right below The Hartford and Liberty Mutual. Founded in 1927 by insurance salesman Herman Wittwer as Farmers Mutual to cater to the auto insurance needs of farmers, it adopted American Family Mutual Insurance Company as its name in 1963 as its products and customer base broadened.
The American Family Auto Insurance Plans
American Family Insurance appeals to customers with its network of locally based insurance agents who offer personal assistance in crafting an insurance policy that best addresses the customer’s unique needs, backed by the company’s more than eight decades of insurance industry experience. The eight main types of auto insurance coverages offered by American Family, nicknamed AmFam, include Collision Coverage for damages resulting from collision or roll-over, Comprehensive Coverage for damages resulting from other causes such as flooding, vandalism or theft, Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability, both of which are mandated by almost all of the 50 states, Uninsured Motorist Coverage for protection against uninsured drivers, Underinsured Motorist Coverage for protection as a pedestrian as well as in hit and run cases, Medical Expense Coverage to pay for injured driver and passenger medical treatments, and Personal Injury Protection covering lost income and child care and medical expenses resulting from an accident.
American Family Auto Insurance Extra Coverages
Additional coverages are available to enhance a basic American Family Auto insurance policy. These include 24/7 Emergency Road Service, Auto Rental Reimbursement to cover rental vehicle costs when the owner’s primary auto is undergoing repairs, Auto Lease/Loan protection to cover the gap between what is owed on a financed new car versus insurance policy limits, and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage, covering injuries or death occurring to passengers involved in the driver’s accident.
American Family Auto Insurance Discounts
Some policy holders can qualify for certain auto insurance discounts offered by American Family, with some restrictions applying in certain states. There is an Auto & Home Premium Advantage for insuring both policies through AmFam, an Auto & Life Discount for bundling these two insurance types, a Multiple-Vehicle Discount for insuring two or more cars in the same household, an Accident-Free Discount rewarding drivers with a good record, a Good Student Discount for students maintaining a certain grade point average, and a Defensive Driving Discount applied for those who pass an approved Defensive Driver Course.
